SNHT-Sturminster Newton Museum Curates Wedding Festival ExhibitionAs the town transforms into a haven of florals and frills for the Sturminster Newton Wedding Festival this May, the local museum will be offering a glimpse into weddings from the past.

Visit the Sturminster Newton Museum from 10:00 – 12:30 on Saturday 7th May 2022 to be enthralled by a gallery of black and white wedding photos from the past 100 years, and some stunning bridal attire.

You might spot some iconic wedding venues from the local area in our selection of images, including St Mary’s Church, Sturminster Newton Castle, and the Methodist Church. There may well be some familiar faces too- ask our knowledgeable volunteers for some more information about the blushing brides and their gorgeous grooms who married in Sturminster Newton all those years ago.

Don’t miss the chance to take a look at the three beautiful dresses on display, from the 1950s, 1970s and 1980s. These fashionable frocks were kindly lent to the museum by three local ladies for the exhibition; Zilla Brown,  Jo Trowbridge (showcasing her mother’s 1950s dress) and Linda Tracey.

SNHT-Sturminster Newton Museum Curates Wedding Festival Exhibition 1If that wasn’t enough reason to visit, you can also receive 10% off at the museum gift shop this weekend only, where you’ll find a range of locally sourced and handmade products, as well as novelty gifts, and a selection of books about the local area.

This exhibition will only be on at the museum for a very short time, so don’t delay your visit! You may also wish to visit our new exhibition ‘Throwaway Living’, or learn some more about Hardy, Young and Barnes in our Dorset Poets room. Don’t forget to travel back in time to the Romans in our permanent exhibition, where you can learn more about the ancient history of the local area, and the Hinton St.Mary Mosaic. Younger visitors delight in seeing our train set, complete with a model of the Dorset and Somerset Railway and historic buildings from Sturminster Newton as it looked in the days of the Cattle Market.

Entry to the museum is always free, and we warmly welcome visitors of all ages to take a look around.
