The Sturminster Newton Heritage Trust is seeking enthusiastic local people to learn new skills and make friends at Sturminster Newton Mill. A range of paid, flexible, part time roles are available with full training provided, including guides and new trainee millers to learn this heritage skill.

Sturminster Newton Mill stands in an idyllic, peaceful environment on the banks of the river Stour. It is a Grade 2 * listed building with a history dating back at least 1000 years. Parts of the current building date back nearly 500 years. The machinery still works and we continue to produce wholegrain flour, which is available to purchase in the mill and town museum.

Sturminster Newton Heritage Trust manage the mill and museum with a group of enthusiastic volunteers.  The mill is open 4 days a week from the end of March until the end of September.

Peter Loosmore, the current miller, has been with us for 30 years following in the steps of his grandfather. Peter runs and maintains the machinery, mills flour and guides visitors. The trustees are looking for trainee millers to share these roles, and Peter will pass on all his knowledge to a trainee, offering a rare opportunity to be a miller.  We are also looking for guides, people who would enjoy showing visitors around this special, historic building. These part time, flexible, roles will be paid positions.

We are planning an event,  a “Grain to Flour ” day on 21st  April which will give an opportunity to see the processes more closely. There will be the chance to start the turbine, hoist the grain to the bin loft, feed it down to the winnower and channel the cleaned grain into the mill stones. Cleaning, dressing and adjusting the mill stones will be explained.  Peter will also explain about the history of this old building with various stories about past millers and mill related events.

If you think you would like to learn the skills and help preserve this special building please contact [email protected]

or Peter Loosmore on 01747 854355

Deadline for applications is 30 April 2024.
